DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 17, 2005--Honey Nut Cheerios announced today the winner of its national "How I Lowered My Cholesterol" search, with 37-year-old John Rohrs earning the honor of appearing on a special-edition Honey Nut Cheerios box.
Rohrs was selected from hundreds of entrants who submitted stories that detailed how they have lowered their cholesterol and made a commitment to a healthier lifestyle. The box will be available nationally this spring.
The box unveiling took place today at Daytona International Speedway. On hand for the announcement was Bill Lester, driver of the #22 Toyota on the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Lester served on the judging panel and has twice appeared on his own special-edition Honey Nut Cheerios box.
Rohrs, a resident of Baldwin, N.Y., has heart disease in his family history and was told by his doctor that he was in danger of suffering a stroke. The father of three drastically changed his diet, took up running, and saw his cholesterol drop from 216 to 145.
An electronic technician, Rohrs completed the Yonkers Marathon last year and hopes to run in the 2005 New York City Marathon. Best of all, the New York Road Runners member says he now has the energy to keep up with his young kids.
"The thought of appearing a box of Honey Nut Cheerios is unbelievable," said Rohrs. "I began a life changing routine as a way to get healthy and this is an incredible reward."
"Honey Nut Cheerios is a leading cereal that offers heart-healthy benefits to help lower cholesterol," said Bruce Vonstein, marketing manager on Honey Nut Cheerios. "We were grateful to hear from so many people who have really made a commitment to live a healthier lifestyle. John has a great story to tell, and we are happy to feature him on Honey Nut Cheerios."
Honey Nut Cheerios, with its whole-grain oats and sweet taste of honey, is a favorite of millions of people and one of America's most popular breakfast cereals. Honey Nut Cheerios is also a heart-healthy cereal that tastes great and can help lower cholesterol. The cereal contains soluble fiber, which, as part of a heart-healthy eating plan, can help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk for heart disease.
